Rachel Abbott, soloist

Rachel completed her time as a young artist on the ENO’s Opera Works programme in 2017 and prior to this she completed a PGDIP AS and associate studentship at the RNCM, a PGCE at Nottingham Trent, a Master’s Degree at Huddersfield University and her undergraduate degree at Sheffield University. She began singing at an early age, joining Bolsover Church choir age eight and starting singing lessons when at secondary school.

Rachel has performed performs with choirs regularly. Her performances include soloist in Mendelsohn’s Elijah Muldowney’s Fall of Jerusalem, Handel’s Judas Maccabeus and Messiah, Haydn’s Nelson Mass and The Creation, Mozart’s Requiem and Coronation Mass, Orff’s Carmina Burana, and Poulenc’s Gloria.

Rachel has performed numerous roles in operas, including Donna Anna at the Lyric Opera Studio in Weimar, Eleonora in LunchBreak Opera’s production of First the Words then the Music by Salieri, Valencienne in The Merry Widow by Lehar, Countess Almaviva in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, the title role in Bellini’s Norma and created the role of Sophie, Queen of Bohemia, in Barry Webb’s new opera Nepomuk. She sang the role of Lady Macbeth with Leeds Youth Opera as an alongside mentoring programme and reprised the role with Preston Opera. She also sang the role of Joanie in Women of Steel in Sheffield and the role of Violetta in La Traviata with Opera on Location.

Rachel has a good deal of experience on the concert platform and loves putting together concerts and recitals for any occasion. She currently works for Lost chord, performing concerts and creating interactive sessions in Dementia homes.

Rachel has a wide-ranging musical background and plays numerous instruments. As well as singing, she teaches singing and piano privately and in schools. She was vocalist and saxophonist for the Derby County Jazz Orchestra, and the NEDMC big band. She was a member of the 2016 Wexford Festival Opera Chorus. She joined the ENO chorus for Verdi’s Luisa Miller and The Grange chorus for recordings to play alongside the onstage chorus during their 2021 season. This year Rachel will be joining the Chorus of the Bayreuth Festival for their summer Festival.

Rachel is currently a peripatetic teacher at Xaverian College in Manchester and is the MD for the M9 Singers and the MD and a performer for Same Difference arts as well as working as a freelance singer. Rachel can be found on Facebook or on her website Rachel Abbott Soprano.
